Mark Matthews

The year is 1990, John Major has been crowned Prime Minister for UK.

My first true introduction into the world of vinyl, 2 turntables and a mixer. My school friend Graham Towers invited me back to his home during our lunch break where we went through his dad’s record collection of rare grooves, soul, funk & disco and practicing to become world class DJs. I had no idea about beat matching or what I was doing, but knew this was for me.

Up to this point my music was mainly 80’s pop and listening my parents collection of Diana Ross, Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Jackson 5 & Motown which evolved into 90’s hip-hop & R&B and then into Jungle / Drum & Bass in my early teens. I was able to save enough pocket & birthday money to be able to purchase a Realistic mixer from Tandy (For those that remember!) and a pair of belt driven Soundlab turntables to get me started.

Whilst at university, I met my life long friend Jason who helped improved my DJing skills and introduced me to the works of Marshall Jefferson, Frankie Knuckles, Masters At Works, Toddy Terry, Grant Nelson, Kerri Chandler, Larry Levan and many more DJs and artists that produced life changing music and mixes for me. I was blessed to discover Garage City at Bar Rumba on Saturdays with Bobby & Steve and residents DJs Chrissy T, Rude Boy Rupert and Funkie P. There was always such a great line-up of DJs such as Paul Trouble Anderson, Andy Ward, CJ Mackintosh, Booker T who shaped my ears with great music and inspired my music selection and the foundation for the Essential Flavours show.

Today, it is an honour to be in the company of the legend Andy Ward and being a part of the Vocal Booth Radio family.

I will be delivering your essential house flavours of past & presents soulful, disco and vocal house, afro & deep beats and house classics from the early 90s through to the latest tracks being release today. There will monthly spotlights and themed sessions to keep your head nodding, foot stomping and dancing whilst reminiscing over good times.
